Advertising, Media, Luxury, Banking- If you are associated with any one of these industries the environment is pretty vibrant, and the opportunities are tremendous
I have built a great set of contacts by going for meets at the American Chamber of Commerce, The British Chamber of Commerce, and also going for the expat parties wherein people from different countries come to make their dream come true at HK.
- language and culture- The culture is indirect, and the people are gentle. As a result they do include you if you share the sensitivity of understanding their culture, language and being open to their way of communication.
- Holding on to British past, and a strong ethnic future- It is amazing how many communities are rooted to the British culture. I read about a research done on the customs that is followed by the locals, and it came out that British High Tea seemed pretty high on the list. Also there are media publications that are headed by those from British background.
- China with Disneyland: There is a rare blend of being a city that has smog, is cosmopolitan, and yet getting spoilt by the power of China. That is evident by the way shopping happens in Central or Kowloon District. A large number of people have high disposable incomes and people hold on to their impusles, desire by refurbishing their lifestyle. Luxury companies have the highest number of shopping outlets in this part of the world.
- Expats with inflated salaries: 2000-2007 has been the time to see the growth in expatriate salaries and does talk of the potential of the economy. The HK economy, is dependent on asia, China, and is strong, resilient.
- Woks, fruit pancakes with some fusion sauces: Like any other multicultural and vibrant city, food is what you make of it. If you follow the food , and restaurant industry and the # of customers they serve, the # of fusion food, the business done over lunch, and dinner, the club culture, the drinking culture, and the ability to meet and greet, and build relationships. The blend, and the cocktail of cultures can best be seen when you have restaurants with chopsticks, knives, and fork
-The other things that are hard to ignore are:
- HSBC, and the banking giants: Hedge funds, BFSI, and corporations that have strong links with the UK, US Market
- Broadband Technology, and Infrastructure: Wifi locations and the way people stay connected. It is reflective of the mobile, tablet culture, and the way people want to have pulse on the latest information
- Hong Kong Jockey Club: Colonial environment comes fresh if you step into Causeway Bay, Admiralty or go to this club. Heritage, Old, yet Modern.
People in transit. There is one thing that is absolutely the DNA of this city, and that is the way people move in and move out of the city. The transitory nature can add to the excitement, and the aspect of change that the city embodies beautifully through its skyline, people, and places.
